The 250th Anniversary of National Theatre – press conference

On a press conference on March 4, the official programme of national and international events marking the 250th anniversary celebrations of the National Theatre was revealed. The anniversary is held under the Honorary Patronage of the President of the Republic of Poland, Bronisław Komorowski.

The jubilee celebrations will culminate on the 19th of November 2015 – the exact anniversary date of the Theatre’s historic inauguration – and will consist of various artistic, educational and promotional activities planned for the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 anniversary seasons.

Jan Englert, the artistic director of the Theatre, discussed the premieres which will be presented on its three stages. The new productions are intended to feature the works by classical Polish authors, both classical and contemporary ones. The planned repertoire highlights the mission of the National Theatre, which from its inception, as the first professional public theatre in Poland, has regularly staged plays written in the Polish language. In the anniversary season, the programme will include 19 Polish titles, along with the premieres.

Krzysztof Torończyk, the director of the National Theatre, and Tomasz Kubikowski, Theatre’s dramaturge, outlined the objectives and details of the programme. In addition to the anniversary gala taking place on the 19th of November 2015 and the premiere of Juliusz Słowacki’s Kordian directed by Jan Englert, other major projects are planned: the anniversary edition of the international festival – National Theatres’ Meeting – with accompanying Symposium, as well as a seven-volume series of publications on the history of the national stage, various educational activities, exhibitions, and the grand Theatre Fair in Theatre Square (Plac Teatralny in Warsaw).

The press conference also included the speeches by Zenon Butkiewicz, the director of Department of National Institutions of Culture in the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, Aleksander Kropiwnicki, the deputy director of the Department of Public and Cultural Diplomacy in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Katarzyna Janowska, the director of TVP Kultura, and Andrzej Klesyk, the general director of PZU SA – the sponsor of the jubilee.
